The City of DeKalb Citizens’ Community Enhancement Commission is pleased to announce the Paint-A-Plug Program, which encourages community members to “adopt” a fire hydrant in the community. By adopting a fire hydrant, participants are given the opportunity to help turn our fire hydrants into works of art. There is no specific theme for the fire hydrants, but artists are encouraged to incorporate elements of the community or their neighborhood into their art. There is no cost to adopt a fire hydrant, but if awarded a hydrant, artists are responsible for providing their own painting materials. Specific details about the types of paint will be provided at the time of application approval.
The Paint-A-Plug Program is not limited to City of DeKalb residents. The City encourages current and former Huskies, students and faculty of District 428, employees of DeKalb businesses, or any outside artists to participate. Applications can be found on the City’s website at the following URL: www.cityofdekalb.com/paintaplug.
Once an application and design proposal is submitted to the City, the Citizens’ Community Enhancement Commission will review applications monthly. If approved, artists will be permitted to paint hydrants between April 1 and November 1. Once a hydrant is painted, artists are encouraged to snap a picture of their works of art, email them to the City, and share them on social media using #ProudlyDeKalb. For questions, please email paintaplug@cityofdekalb.com.
