The DeKalb Park District recently completed installing the permanent dog park in Katz Park. A temporary dog park had been established using a little-used softball field for the past couple years while a permanent dog park location and plan was established. DeKalb is now home to the only dog park in DeKalb County.
Improvements in the new dog park include separate areas for large and small dogs, significant more green space, new fencing, shade structures, a pool pad for warmer weather, new leash racks, and an ADA accommodating entrance. New landscaping also was added, and the Park District planted 27 trees. The total cost for the improvements was about $75,000.
To celebrate the grand opening, the DeKalb Park District held a ribbon cutting and costume contest at the Dog Park at Katz Park on a rainy Halloween afternoon. Dedicated dogs and owners participated despite the inclement weather.
“The new dog park is a great investment for our community.” said Scott deOliveira, Marketing Supervisor for the DeKalb Park District. “Normal parks aren’t appropriate for dogs to be off leashes. This is a large area where dogs can play and run and socialize with other dogs. The design and features were based on feedback from dog owners who had been using the temporary dog park. To see the enjoyment and enthusiasm both dogs and owners have when visiting the dog park is really special. It definitely is something that makes you feel #proudlydekalb.”
