DeKalb Library/DeKalb Kiwanis Provide Programs on Healthy Eating & Living

The DeKalb Public Library presents its next installment of the “Healthy Mind, in a Healthy Body” initiative with “Snack on THIS! Healthy Foods with Hy-Vee” for children and caregivers on Saturday, May 20 at 2:00 p.m.

Hy-Vee dietician Lisa Brandt will be in the library to discuss healthy living and nutritious alternatives to unhealthy snack foods. Using youth books such as Kid’s First Cookbook by the American Cancer Society and Kids Cook 1-2-3 by Rozanne Gold, Lisa will demonstrate how youngsters can use healthy ingredients to make quick snacks.

Along with a demonstration, Lisa will provide sample tastings of the snacks she creates. Books on healthy cooking and sustainable living will be available for borrowing.

This program is FREE and open to all, no registration is required. Hy-Vee has generously provided this program at no cost to the library.

This program is part of the “A Healthy Mind, in a Healthy Body” initiative between the DeKalb Public Library and the DeKalb Kiwanis Club.

Members of the public are expected to assume increasing responsibility for their own health and to keep themselves informed about health issues. As governments and private sector organizations look to control health-related costs, citizens face growing pressure to take responsibility for their own health. An important element of this responsibility involves staying informed about health matters. The Kiwanis Club of DeKalb has a long history of supporting health related activities and literacy at all levels. The DeKalb Public Library has expert staff and facilities for planning and executing programming.

This 5-year initiative will bring a variety of programming for all ages to the library focusing on physical, mental, and economic health, as well as sustainable living.

In April, the DeKalb Kiwanis and the DeKalb Public Library kicked-off this initiative with a “Lunch is on Us” healthy pizza-making workshop that provided not only FREE ingredients for families to make their own healthy pizza to eat later, but also a FREE pizza lunch. Nearly 100 people participated, and left with their bellies full and dinner plans set!

Join us in June, as Lisa Brandt visits the Farmers’ Market for another family-friendly demonstration! More information on this upcoming event will be provided soon.
